Project Summary

Scouten was contracted by the City of Quesnel to provide structural engineering services for a new timber trellis as part of the West Fraser Centre Beautification Project.

Project Description

In April of 2018, the City of Quesnel announced its plans for the West Fraser Centre Beautification Project. The project included updates to the curling rink and electrical systems; in the outdoor spaces new murals, benches, lighting, trees, and decorative features were planned.

The intent was to create a cohesive look throughout the plaza and downtown Quesnel. The consulting firm, Urban Systems, created the overall plan for the exterior beautification elements.

One of the new features was the timber trellis shading a seating area near the northeast corner of the curling rink. The City of Quesnel engaged Scouten Engineering to provide the structural engineering services for the trellis based on Urban System’s conceptual design. The trellis consisted of a cantilevered structural frame constructed of cast-in-place concrete foundations, rough-sawn structural timber, and steel bolted connections. The exterior beautification was completed in July of 2019 and boasts a gorgeous courtyard setting to welcome guests and athletes alike to the West Fraser Centre.
