Project Summary

Starting in the late months of 2014, Scouten Engineering and Nomodic Modular Structures Inc. begun collaborating on the design of a 68 person operators’ camp for Canbriam Energy Inc. Scouten’s role was to provide a site layout, grading plan, utility design, and layout support.

Project Description

Scouten prepared a design for the site grading and road structures using the information provided from a Geotechnical Report prepared by Parkland Geo. Due to the existing clay-based soil conditions, a typical granular road base was cost-prohibitive. Working with Parkland and a product supplier, Scouten developed a design incorporating woven geotextiles and triaxial geogrids to reduce the thickness of the required road base.

The entrance road to the site was fairly steep due to the proposed location of the camp and the existing road below. Care had to be given to the ditches to prevent erosion due to high stormwater runoff volumes and velocities. All of the steeper ditches throughout the site were lined with turf reinforcement mats to prevent erosion of the existing clay soils. The estimated frost depth for the site was up to 2.5 m deep, and the proposed site for the camp was located significantly higher than the sewage disposal field. The change in elevation allowed us to bury the sanitary utility below the frost depth to prevent freezing. The water utility on site was also buried at the deeper elevation below the frost depth. All stormwater runoff was handled via overland flow using ditches.
