Project Summary

Scouten Engineering was contracted by Norson Construction to design an engineered demolition plan for the former Sears store in Aberdeen Mall. After completing the demolition plans, we were asked to also include formwork and shoring design as they moved forward with the construction of new retail stores.

Project Description

In the later months of 2017, all Sears stores across Canada were closed and liquidated; this left a number of malls with large empty retail spaces. Aberdeen Mall’s plan in Kamloops was to demolish the existing Sears store to make more usable space for multiple tenants and an expansion to their existing food court.

Norson Construction, the contractor on-site for the project, brought Scouten Engineering on to design an engineered demolition plan. There were several structural elements throughout the area that needed to come down in a specific sequence in order to not damage the rest of the mall structure.

We completed the demolition plans by February of 2019 and the demolition took place shortly after. Later that year, Norson Construction increased our scope of work to include formwork and shoring design, as they moved forward with the construction of the new retail stores. Construction of the new tenant spaces and food court expansion was completed in October of 2019.
