Assessment and load rating of an existing,
deteriorated two span, cast-in-place concrete
bridge and the detailed design and drafting
of structural improvements.
The existing bridge was designed and
constructed in the late 1950's to the
Code of the day and had deteriorated significantly
under the live load demands of current,
heavier truck traffic. The conventionally
reinforced bridge was seriously deficient
with respect to shear capacity and had
cracked extensively at all support locations.
External post-tensioning was used to
increase the available shear capacity
of the concrete stringers considerably,
but also increased the flexural stiffness
of the structure, improving its dynamic
response under repetitive and heavy live
loads.
