Transportation Projects

Project: Ahbau Creek Bridge
Location: Highway 97, North of Quesnel, BC
Client: BC Ministry of Transportation
Services:

Assessment and load rating of an existing, deteriorated two span, cast-in-place concrete bridge and the detailed design and drafting of structural improvements.

The existing bridge was designed and constructed in the late 1950's to the Code of the day and had deteriorated significantly under the live load demands of current, heavier truck traffic. The conventionally reinforced bridge was seriously deficient with respect to shear capacity and had cracked extensively at all support locations.

External post-tensioning was used to increase the available shear capacity of the concrete stringers considerably, but also increased the flexural stiffness of the structure, improving its dynamic response under repetitive and heavy live loads.

Project: 8th Street Culvert
Location: Dawson Creek, BC
Client: BC Ministry of Transportation
Services:

Detailed inspection and condition assessment of an existing corrugated metal pipe (CMP) culvert under the principal highway in Dawson Creek. The culvert had lost sidewall support because of hydraulic piping adjacent to the pipe shell and was severely deformed, leaking badly and in danger of collapse.

An innovative in-situ repair strategy was developed to avoid disruption to traffic on an important commercial route through a northern BC community. Repairs consisted of staged shoring and replacement of the steel liner plates with cast-in-place concrete ribs.

Project: John Hart Bridge
Location: Prince George, BC
Client: Ministry of Transportation
Services:

Detailed inspection and condition assessment of an existing 7 span bridge, consisting of pre-cast, post-tensionsed concrete girders with a laterally post-tensioned concrete deck, supported by cast-in-place hammerhead style piers.

In one of the largest strengthening projects of its kind, carbon FRP sheets were used to increase the shear capacity of 42 girders by 15 to 20 percent.
