Detailed design of new waterslide support
structure, stairs, handrails and accessories
using Advanced Composite Materials to
eliminate ongoing corrosion with existing
painted steel components.
The ACM components consisted of fibre
reinforced polymer structural shapes manufactured
by the pultrusion process. The materials
consisted of continuous strand, roving
aramid reinforcement in a high-stability
vinyl ester resin matrix.
ACM's are being used increasingly in
the design and fabrication of structural
components because they are exceptionally
strong, light-weight and essentially corrosion
free, even in aggressive environments
such as swimming pools, pulpmills and
other industrial settings.
Advanced Composite Materials provide
energy efficient and environmentally sustainable
technical solutions for a variety of applications.
Although initially more expensive, structures
made with ACM's are extremely cost effective.
Costs and environmental liabilities associated
with painting, repair and replacement
of conventional steel structures are reduced
significantly.

Inspection and engineering assessment
of an existing 600,000 gallon, cast-in-place
concrete potable water reservoir and development
of a strategy to stop chronic leakage
and corrosion of the structural reinforcing
steel.
A non-destructive method using half-cell
testing revealed the relative electrical
potential of the reinforcing steel in
the surrounding concrete matrix. This
technology also provides an extremely
cost effective method of predicting corrosion
of reinforcing steel in concrete structures
before there is visible and irreversible
deterioration (rusting, concrete spalling,
etc.).

Fort St. James, BC |
| Client: |
Regional
District of Bulkley-Nechako |
| Services: |
Detailed design, construction inspection
and contract administration services for
a solid waste transfer station in northwestern
BC. The facility was designed as a two
level structure to allow transfer vehicles
to pull through at a dedicated lower ramp
while collection vehicles, and the general
public, drop off at the higher, tipping
floor.
The design also incorporated secondary
waste management features such as a swap
shed, hazardous material containers, and
a wood waste storage area.
