Cause and Origin assessment of a major
roof collapse in northern BC including
field inspection, assessment of environmental
conditions (snow, wind pressure etc.)
and a technical review of previous modifications
made to the structure.
The 32,500 square foot arena housed
a single sheet of hockey rink ice, permanent
bleacher seating and dressing areas. The
building structure consisted of a long
span bowstring-style wood framed trusses
supported by a system of cast-in-place
concrete portal frames with in-fill concrete
block masonry.
The entire roof structure collapsed
within minutes on an unusually windy night,
with less than the design snow load on
the structure.
Detailed engineering reporting was required
for the examinations for discovery, and
litigation that followed.
